No NULC for Riotimus This Year

It looks like “Toll Man” and “Pluck This Jewel . . .” didn’t have what the NULCers were looking for this year. Since it has been a while since I posted about my real writing efforts, and since I received the rejection letter today, it seemed like the moment for a post. Writing those stories was an incredibly satisfying experience. Win or lose, they are a few of my favorites. Write on.

I'm sorry to hear that. But your writing really has come a long way in the last year, regardless of what the NULC or anyone else might have to say about it. Keep on rockin'.

True that...true that.

And keep on postin' too. Give us some more of the R's genius. Don't be stingy now!

That sucks. Do you have any theories why they might not have been chosen? Genre bias, or word length? Regardless, I think your stories are wonderful. You'll eventually get published. I hope I one day reach your level of achievement by actually submitting something. That will be an accomplishment in and of itself.

I think it was a combination of things - I submitted within hours of the deadline (I heard most of the slots were full even before the deadline, but that is just a rumor), I submitted two stories that seemed right at the moment, but upon rejection I can see how they lack certain elements that have brought me success with some of my earlier work. Possibly the biggest problem, though, is that at some point the "Tales" grew large enough that I was writing for the collection and not individual stories any more. Both stories I submitted could loosely be considered the climax of story arcs involving several supposedly stand-alone stories. I'm guessing that they just didn't stand alone, and the readers who weren't already attached to Arden failed to become so. So there are a couple of my theories.

Interesting. I actually remember when I was reading "Toll Man" not being sure what Arden was up to--why he was going to so much trouble. I don't think I've read all your Tales, so maybe you're right about that. You need to have a little more background on Arden before you really "get" the story.

Have you considered submitting to any magazines, like Amazing Stories? I think they do mostly sci-fi, but there may be others out there that would be appropriate for your stories.

It is next on my agenda. I have a few edited that I just haven't sent out yet. Hopefully they will do a little better with a sci/fantasy crowd.
