Bats and Stuff

"Cowboy? You're no more a cowboy than you are a little leather-winged bat." -- Kaylee Felts from "The Mud Below" by Annie Proulx

I'm getting ready for some pretty heavy revision to my novel. I think the changes I'm going to make will be good ones. I'm also getting a feel for teaching, and I'm planning on graduating in April with my MA. That's my writing report for now. One day I'll have time for a real post. Surely.

Sweet! Sounds like good stuff is going on. I hear about Annie Proulx all the time, but haven't read any...maybe I should. Or maybe I should just go to bed (as they say in The Importance of Being Earnest).

Good luck with the revisions and all that other stuff. Do you enjoy revision, or does it suck the life out of you?

I'm with Ben, enquiring minds want to know. Do you like revising or is it hell on earth?

For many years I struggled with revision. I didn't want to "kill my darlings," as the saying goes, and I didn't really know what I should be changing. I've gotten over the darlings bit; I want to have good stories, and sometimes lines or scenes don't work enough to use where they originated. Before I start revising anything, I save it as a new file. I mention that because it seems like sometimes something that didn't work in one story is perfect for another. But sometimes they don't work anywhere.
That's a shame, but I try to keep my chin up even as I carve up my work.

Knowing what to cut is something that has taken me a long time to learn. I think it is very subjective, so there are different revision needs for everyone, but now that I've learned how to revise my own writing it is much more enjoyable. If you guys care about it, maybe I will work up a "Revision According to Riotimus" post in the near future.
