Good Council

From The Fellowship of the Ring:

"Then if the Ring cannot be kept from him for ever by strength," said Glofindel, "two things only remain for us to attempt: to send it over the Sea, or to destroy it."

"But Gandalf has revealed to us that we cannot destroy it by any craft that we here possess, said Elrond. "And they who dwell beyond the Sea would not receive it: for good or ill it belongs to Middle-earth; it is for us who still dwell here to deal with it."

"Then," said Glorfindel, "let us cast it into the deeps, [. . .] in the Sea it would be safe."

"Not safe forever," said Gandalf. There are many things in the deep waters; and seas and lands may change. And it is not our part here to take thought only for a season, or for a few lives of Men, or for a passing age of the world. We should seek a final end of this menace, even if we do not hope to make one."

Gandalf would never get elected with that kind of platform.

I agree, but I'd vote for him.

Heh. Me too.

I came across a phrase in one of my favorite websites (factcheck.org) this morning that sums up what's wrong with politics and politicians. It's part of an article about an attack ad from Obama/Biden on McCain/Palin, but you could substitute any other politicians or interest groups, and it would still hold true:

"[The] main criticism rests on distorting McCain's words rather than evaluating an actual component of his health care proposal."

I won't go on at length about the whole thing here (that's something for my own blog), other than to say it would sure be nice to have somebody with Gandalf's clear good sense around. :)

I put a comment on the other day and push the wrong something and it just went away and I had to work...sounds like the worried walrus. Anyway, ironically Samuel came home with "The Hobbit" and so we are reading our first JRR Tolken and we are loving it. Samuel says now he understands how you boys got so wrapped up in it, it is fantastic. Thank you for being such a great influence on you little brother.

Hi Riotimus,
I'm back. I agree with Ing. It would be fantastic to have someone with Gandalfs clear good sense, but isn't the definition of a politician someone with no sense? Oh, and out of touch with reality?

Heck, by that measure I could be a politician. :)
