Absentee

I have been writing a story that pushes beyond anything I have done before. The story is about a man who's been living a normalish life when all of a sudden things start happening to him because of someone he knew growing up. That person has not made (in what I've written so far) nor will he make an appearance in the story. His influence will be throughout the story (or stories). I don't know how well it will work. Have any of you tried such a thing?

I have nothing in the way of advice, and I have not written anything like this, but I agree with E. This could be really great. I would like some more details, if you are willing to share them.

Thank you both for your faith and encouragement. The story came about in a funny way. It started with a name.

A funny name.

Funny like a clown.

It was somewhat influenced by my reading of Rise and Fall of the Third Reich about life in those early years of consolidation power struggles for the Nazis. A person could end up in a concentration camp or worse just from having been friends with the wrong person at some point or even less than that.

So the story so far is about how the government (or one of its freedom-protecting agencies) have determined that the name character is a threat to the illusion of democracy for whatever reason and so normal guy suffers.

I can't really say much more without just telling the story. I will send you a draft once it is done though.

Sounds good. Thanks for giving me the skinny. I will look forward to reading it.
